A Track Record of
Research Success
Thanks to American Diabetes Association-funded research, key discoveries have been made that make life better for people with diabetes, including:
invention of the first glucose meter
introduction of more effective forms of insulin
therapeutic regimes to control both pre- and post-meal blood glucose levels
invention of the portable insulin pump
oral diabetes medicines to help control blood glucose levels for people with type 2 diabetes
laser treatments to prevent blindness
new drugs to help people with diabetes control their disease
"I lost my father to the devastating complications of type 2 diabetes. My sons lost their grandfather. And since it is hereditary, I'm well aware of the increased risk for my children. I have three energetic boys. I want to stop diabetes because I don’t want to lose another loved one to this disease.
"I support the American Diabetes Association in hopes of finding better therapies and ultimately a cure. I even took our boys on a field trip to an ADA-funded lab so they could see what our family invests in and what our money is doing. We may have a future researcher in our family!"

The need for your help is truly urgent. While death rates due to cancer, heart disease, and stroke have all declined in the last 20 years, diabetes death rates continue to climb. Donate today and your contribution could be doubled through our matching gift program.
If you are one of the 24 million children and adults in the United States who live with diabetes, you’ve got a 60-70% chance of suffering from mild to severe nerve damage, and more than a 65% chance of dying from heart disease or stroke. Living with diabetes also increases the rate of amputation, kidney failure and adult blindness.
And even though diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, the federal government spends only a nickel each week on diabetes research on behalf of every American, so it’s up to the American Diabetes Association — and concerned supporters like you — to fund vital research to discover new ways to detect, treat and cure diabetes.
Last year, with the help of our donors, the American Diabetes Association provided $42.5 million in research funds, and awarded 492 grants at leading US research institutions. Our advocacy efforts helped secure an additional $600 million in federal funding for diabetes research. In addition, we published professional journals that reached more than 84,000 health care professionals.
Your generous donation will help us continue funding vital research, advocacy, education and public awareness efforts for American families affected by diabetes. Just as importantly, your support sends a message to everyone living with diabetes that they are not alone and that together, we will stop diabetes!
