Drive Discovery - Pathway to Stop Diabetes Research Grants
The American Diabetes Association (Association) announced $9.75 million to six recipients of the 2017 Pathway to Stop Diabetes (Pathway) research grants, providing $1.625 million to each scientist over five- to seven-year grant term to spur breakthroughs in clinical science, technology, diabetes care and potential cures.
Since launching in 2013 and including the six 2017 awardees, Pathway has awarded more than $36 million to 23 leading scientists. The scientific contributions include notable advances in developing a "smart insulin" patch; identifying a molecular trigger for the autoimmune attack that causes type 1 diabetes; linking genetic and environmental factors to the development of type 2 diabetes; and uncovering how diabetes causes blindness, among other complications.

Raise Voice - Safe at School Legislation in New Mexico
The American Diabetes Association is sponsoring a bill (HB287/SB148) in New Mexico to pass the Safe at School tenets for children with diabetes within the state. Thirty-one states (including the District of Columbia) now meet all three tenets of the Safe at School Campaign. These three tenets require schools to:
- Allow trained school staff members to administer insulin;
- Allow trained school staff members to administer glucagon; and
- Allow capable students to self-manage their diabetes, anywhere, anytime.
The bill (SB148) has passed the Senate Education Committee with no opposition (8-0), and will be heard in the House Health Committee this week. If you or anyone you know is interested in testifying in support of the bill, or have any questions about the bill, please contact Christine Fallabel, Director of State Government Affairs, at cfallabel@diabetes.org
