FDA Approves Pfizer Drug for Diabetes
Pfizer Inc. said Friday the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved its medication for pain caused by nerve damage from diabetes or shingles, but it is still under review for treating partial seizures in adults. Pfizer said that Lyrica is the first FDA-approved treatment for this pain, often described as burning, tingling, sharp, stabbing, or pins and needles in the feet, legs, hands, or arms.

Study Links Fast Food to Weight Gain, Diabetes
Young adults who frequently eat fast food are far more likely to gain weight and develop type 2 diabetes than those who don't, researchers at the University of Minnesota and elsewhere have found.

"While this sounds like a no-brainer, there really isn't much science at all" linking fast-food diets to an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, said Mark Pereira, assistant professor of epidemiology in the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health. "It could be argued that this is a first-of-its-kind study."

Establishing connections between dietary habits, which can be modified, and health risks is important because type 2 diabetes and obesity are becoming epidemics in the United States. Obesity is a major risk factor for diabetes, while diabetes, in turn, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Together, they annually cause hundreds of thousands of premature deaths and cost billions of dollars to treat.

Exercise Combats Metabolic Syndrome in Older Adults
Researchers at Johns Hopkins have determined that in people age 55 to 75, a moderate program of physical exercise can significantly offset the potentially deadly mix of risk factors for heart disease and diabetes known as the metabolic syndrome. More specifically, the researchers found that exercise improved overall fitness, but the 23 percent fewer cases were more strongly linked to reductions in total and abdominal body fat and increases in muscle leanness, rather than improved fitness.

Study: Diuretics a Net Plus for Elderly
Diuretics, pills used by millions of elderly people to lower high blood pressure, clearly reduce the long-term risk of death from heart attacks and strokes, according to a study that could ease fears that the medication's risks outweigh its benefits. Diuretics, which work by removing fluid from the body, have been used for decades. But doctors have realized in the past few years that the drugs raise the risk of developing diabetes, which itself can lead to heart attacks and strokes. As a result, some doctors were afraid that diuretics' risks would cancel out their benefits.

The first long-term study to examine the question found that while diuretics do raise the risk of diabetes, the rate of death from heart attacks or strokes was still nearly 15 percent lower in patients getting a diuretic compared to those who were given dummy pills.

"This is the most conclusive information we're likely to have, at least for some time," said Dr. Jeffrey Cutler, senior scientific adviser at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a sponsor of the study. "I think this will further reassure physicians."

National guidelines list diuretics as a first-line treatment for high blood pressure. Nevertheless, some doctors have avoided prescribing diuretics since research linked them to diabetes.

Insulin Therapy and Your Practice Subscription Series
Insulin is an extremely effective, but often underutilized, treatment option for diabetes. Insulin has unlimited power to reduce plasma glucose levels in individuals with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Numerous studies have shown that lowering glycemic levels will reduce the incidence and progression of the microvascular complications of diabetes. This new educational activity from the American Diabetes Association will explore how primary care providers can better care for their patients by introducing insulin therapy into their treatment regimen in a timely and appropriate manner.

Clinical Management of Obesity with Special Attention to Type 2 Diabetes
Obesity and overweight have been strongly linked with numerous chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, gallbladder disease, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, and several forms of cancer.  Data indicate the unique position of the primary care providers in the health care system and the important role that they can play in identifying individuals at risk of obesity as well as in preventing the development of co-morbid conditions through early weight control intervention.

This monograph is a straightforward, CE-accredited review of the current knowledge of the health risks of obesity and the best treatment options and how to implement them.  There are many useful tables and figures that can help you understand the state of the art on diagnosing and treating overweight and obesity.

This activity was developed specifically for the physicians and nurses in the primary care setting who treat obese patients especailly those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
