Welcome!

Alert Day

We’re thrilled to bring you the first American Diabetes Association eNews edition here in the Bluegrass! Chances are, you know someone with diabetes whether it’s a family member, friend or co-worker. As the Association works to improve the lives of all those affected by diabetes and to find a cure, we want to keep you up to date on how we are working to move the mission forward. We hope you find our eNews informative and helpful. Please feel free to forward our eNews to others who are affected by this devastating disease.

Next Tuesday, March 26, the American Diabetes Association will celebrate its 25th year of encouraging more people to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Alert Day® is held the fourth Tuesday in March and is a one-day “wake up call” asking Americans to take the Diabetes Risk Test. We hope you will join in Alert Day this year and take the test on the American Diabetes Association Facebook page. There, you can ask questions, engage with the community and share the test with friends and loved ones. For every test taken, Boar’s Head® will donate $5 (up to $50,000) to the Association beginning on Alert Day and ending April 9th.

Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes®

This year’s Step Out Walk is just 10 weeks away! Why do we walk? For you. For your loved ones. For the 400,000 Kentuckians who live each day with this disease. Step Out helps the American Diabetes Association provide diabetes education for individuals and families, advocate on behalf of those living with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure.

A Day in the Life of Diabetes

Saul

Living with a Type 1 diabetic can be challenging. Living with a Type 1 toddler and managing their care 24-7 is a test on the limits of your sanity.

We spend our mornings untangling dinosaurs and trucks from insulin pump tubing. We find ourselves constantly cleaning covered CGM sites (I won’t tell you in what), and then there’s dealing with those seemingly random, unexplainable high BG readings that always leave us guessing… did your sister hide another pack of candy under the couch?

Saul was diagnosed on January 27th, 2012. He was 15 months old.

Diabetes Tip of the Month

March happens to be National Nutrition Month.  You may spend a lot of time planning meals, but what about snacks?

When it comes to snacking, people often think of foods that are high in sugar or added fats but you have lots of other options. Snacks can help curb hunger while adding a nutritious energy boost to your day, but that means choosing foods wisely.

Diabetes Day at the Capitol

On Feb. 28, more than 120 diabetes advocates attended the Kentucky Diabetes Day at the Capitol, an annual event that is co-sponsored by the American Diabetes Association and the Kentucky Diabetes Network.

During our training session on how to speak to legislators about diabetes, we were visited by House Minority Leader, Jeff Hoover, who related his own moving personal connection to diabetes. We also heard from Deata Gregory, Mary Ellen Thompson and Mary Beth Lacy, who all gave compelling stories of their personal experiences with diabetes.
