RESEARCH UPDATE
Since 1952, the American
Diabetes Association’s
investment of more than
$700 million in nearly 4,500
diabetes research projects
has contributed significantly
to advances in diabetes care
and reductions in diabetes
complications, allowing
people with diabetes to live
longer, healthier lives.
In 2014 alone, the
Association made nearly $30
million available for research,
supporting 376 research
projects performed
by 364 investigators at
143 leading academic
research institutions
across the U.S.
Currently, the
Association is funding
the following Research
Project in Arizona:
|
Project Title:
Dietary
Induced Insulin
Resistance and Vascular
Dysfunction in Humans:
Mechanisms and Therapeutic
Approaches
Research Subject:
Insulin
Resistance/Pre-diabetes
Researcher & Facility: Peter
Reaven, MD—Carl T. Hayden
Veterans Affairs Medical
Center
State Date: January 1, 2014
End Date: December 31, 2015
Research Summary:
The
focus of this study is:
1) to understand the
contributions of overeating
and specific dietary fats to
the development of insulin
resistance and the mechanisms
by which this occurs, and
2) to
attempt to identify therapeutic
approaches that may reduce
the consequences of the high
fat diets on these metabolic
abnormalities. Through this
research, a dietary model
has been developed that has
a unique ability to induce a
rapid and profound whole
body insulin resistance in
humans. By isolating a dietary
model that creates insulin
resistance, there will be better
insight as to what types of
diets to avoid. This project is
believed to make substantial
contributions to both
understanding development
of Type 2 Diabetes as well as
how to potentially prevent its
occurrence.
ADVOCACY UPDATE
The August recess work
period (August 8 – September
7) is a great opportunity for us to meet with Members of Congress in person about our critical diabetes legislative requests. It’s important that Senators and Representative hear from us during this time about our efforts to Stop Diabetes®! The focus of these meetings are to educate and to gain support of our Congress, increase funding for the lifesaving diabetes research and prevention programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Centers for Disease Control and, Prevention (CDC) and the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP).
To date, over 30 Arizona and New Mexico advocates registered and participated in eight visits with legislators and three meetings with Senators and their staff.
To register as a diabetes advocate, sign up today at: www.diabetes.org/advocacy. As a diabetes advocate, you show support for the nearly 30 million Americans affected by taking action towards bringing down barriers and increase research funding.
