Crowd Surfing Across the Finish Line

BrianLisik

Last week the Northeast Ohio Tour de Cure team announced new entertainment headlining the finish line stage. Ohio based singer-songwriter Brian Lisik will be entertaining riders and their families with live music at the finish line festivities.

Lisik released his fourth solo album, Curtisinterruptedus, in April of 2015 on Cherokee Queen Records.Since its release, Curtisinterruptedus has received favorable press both nationally and internationally from publications including Americana UK, Goldmine, and No Depression. His first single, "Jan. 13", from the Curtisinterruptedus album premiered its music video exclusively on The Huffington Post and can be heard on stations in Ohio, Florida, and Colorado.

We are extremely excited to have this local and well accomplished performer treating our riders to a show worthy of finishing off the ride of their lives.

The Fundraising Appeal

With so many causes and events to give to, fundraising can feel competitive at times but it doesn't have to be a battle for money. People give for many reasons but the most common reason of all is that they are affected by the mission you are on. With 29 million people living with diabetes and another 86 million with prediabetes you are riding and fundraising to end a disease that 1 out of every 11 people has. When you are seeking donations remember that the facts are on your side, so use them. Everyone knows about diabetes but perhaps they may not realize that everyday 4,660 will be diagnosed, 200 people with diabetes will either lose their limbs or their lives. Maybe they haven't read about the amazing research that has provided better medication, management devices, and hope to those 29 million. It's possible they haven't seen the future of diabetes if they don't act: by the year 2050, 1 in 3 adults could have the disease. And perhaps they don't realize that the person standing in front of them, asking for their support, is one of the nearly 30 million Americans that face the daily struggles of diabetes.

Whether it be an employer that sees the rising health care costs associated with diabetes or a teacher expecting her first child that witnesses the struggles a student with type 1 faces, everyone you meet will have a reason to give. Illustrating this disease will go a long way to secure a donation but how do you reach donors? Emails from your event center page are a great place to start. Create an email schedule to share your story and ask for support and follow through. Include your event page URL on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social media posts. Reach your employer by means of a matching gift program or host a small fundraising event with your social group.

Most importantly remember that we are here to help. Good luck and thank you!

American Diabetes Association Announces Team Tackle

Team Tackle_Aiden

On April 7, 2016 American Diabetes Association Advocates accompanied by players from NFL teams across the nation met in Washington, D.C. for Capitol Hill Advocacy Day. The Advocates along with CEO Kevin Hagan presented a petition with more than 79,000 signatures to U.S. Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Susan M. Collins (R-ME), co-chairs of the Senate Diabetes Caucus. The petition calls on Congress to increase funding towards diabetes research, and the Diabetes Prevention Program.

The centerpiece of the group's day on The Hill was the announcement of the American Diabetes Association's new Team Tackle initiative. Team Tackle unites current, former, and upcoming professional football players from all 32 professional teams to raise awareness of diabetes and prediabetes, and to champion increased funding for research. Representing Northeast Ohio on Team Tackle is Cleveland Browns Tight End Randall Telfer joining Team Tackle in support of his grandmother. Representing the Association from Northeast Ohio was National Advocacy Chair Gina Gavlak and 11-year old Aiden Dine, an outspoken Youth Advocate from Hudson, Ohio. Aiden shared his very emotional story in front of a room of Senators and NFL players, calling on all of them to make diabetes a thing of the past.

Advocacy is a corner stone of the AMerican Diabetes Association mission. Our efforts to improve the lives and protect the rights of those living with diabetes are made possible by the support of our Tour de Cure riders and the funds they raise. Thank you!
