Be An Ambassador!

Join us for our upcoming Ambassador Training! Becoming an American Diabetes Association Wellness Ambassador is a great way to encourage people in your community to take control of their health. The American Diabetes Association National Capital Area has established a program to train volunteers to implement diabetes workshops in the Washington DC Metropolitan area. This training will give people who are passionate about health promotion the resources and knowledge they need to lead workshops on diabetes in their own communities. Ambassadors support the Association’s mission by representing our chapter at health fairs and leading workshop to address health issues through continued outreach and education on diabetes.

Ambassador Trainings will include information on type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes as well as preventative and management tips through nutrition and physical activity.

Next Training:
When: Wednesday, April 19, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Alert Day Recap

Held on March 28, 2017, American Diabetes Association Alert Day is a day to sound the alarm about the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in American adults by asking America to take the Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test. The free, anonymous risk test is available online and only takes a minute to complete. With questions such as "Do you have a family history of diabetes" and "Are you physically active," participants can learn if they’re at risk for type 2 diabetes in 60 seconds. The National Capital Area not only encouraged individuals in our community via employee wellness fairs at Lockheed Martin and other companies to take the Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test on Alert Day, but also participated in an important round table discussion on diabetes, hosted by Mary’s Center, to help highlight the critical work that community health centers do to help prevent diabetes and to help those living with diabetes manage their disease.

Take Action: Take the type 2 diabetes risk test today, and share it with your loved ones.

American Diabetes Association National Capital Area and DC United for Fitness

The National Capital Area is teaming up with DC United and public schools in Northern Virginia from April through June 2017 to implement after school health and wellness workshops for elementary school kids aimed at increasing awareness about diabetes and diabetes prevention.  Participating schools will support our efforts to teach kids in grades 3-5 about the importance of healthy eating habits and regular physical activity in preventing obesity and chronic disease. Students will also be given age appropriate and fun health and wellness tools and resources along with the opportunity to participate in lively soccer clinics led by DC United players!

Take Action: If you’d like to learn more about this and other initiatives happening locally please contact Suku Powers, Director of Community Health Strategies, at spowers@diabetes.org or 202-331-8303 ext. 4540.
