In 2006, students at Ridge Street School continued their dedication to diabetes awareness with their fourth Sc hool Walk for Diabetes campaign. As a Title I school, the generosity of the Ridge Street community has been overwhelmingtheir SWFD events have raised more than $9,000.

Teachers and staff at Ridge Street are enthusiastic about the campaign and encourage students to become better citizens by participating in an event that serves others. Mr. Richardson, an art teacher, encourages his students to get involved by having them design banners for the event and rewarding his classes who show their dedication to the cause.

"The walk enables us to spotlight the importance of developing good health habits and offer resources to those who have diabetes," said Maryann Flores, Ridge Streets School Walk for Diabetes coordinator.

Flores added that Liz Culliton, her American Diabetes Association representative, served as an excellent role model throughout the campaign by visiting the school and talking with students about diabetes.

"Many of our students have relatives who are affected by diabetes," Flores said. "Lizs efforts helped them realize they can show their support by participating in School Walk for Diabetes."
