Are you the next National Youth Advocate?


Emma Klatman - Capitol The National Youth Advocate position is open to young people ages 12-17 years old (as of October 1, 2009) with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Candidates should have experience with advocacy at the American Diabetes Association, a willingness to speak publicly at various events throughout the year, and be available to travel with a parent or guardian.

 National Youth Advocate Obligations

  • Commit to a one-year term as the American Diabetes Association’s National Youth Advocate.
  • Work in close coordination with Association volunteers and staff to communicate diabetes advocacy message via speaking engagements, ADA website, media and to policymakers.  Click here to see the National Youth Advocate Facebook page.
  • Attend training at the American Diabetes Association National Office in Alexandria, VA.
  • Serve on National Advocacy Committee as Ex Officio member and attend 2 meetings (March and November).
  • Commit to working with staff to keep an online journal as the National Youth Advocate. Click here to read the National Youth Advocate blog on Planet D.
  • Travel to Diabetes Camps and other Association events throughout the year.
