American Diabetes Association: Diabetes World - Professional Edition

Epidemiological studies have shown that A1C values in nondiabetic adults predict incident diabetes, cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality, and total mortality. In these studies, A1C values well within the currently defined normal range were still independently associated with outcomes. There is now renewed interest in using A1C for diagnosis and screening purposes. A study in the May 2009 issue of Diabetes Care finds that elevated A1C is common in the general population of nondiabetic adults and is linked to impaired fasting glucose and an array of other risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease in this population.
