Together we can Stop Diabetes. One step at a time.
I am walking and raising funds for the American Diabetes Association's signature fundraising walk, Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes. Every step I take and every dollar I raise will make a difference in the lives of 23.6 million Americans living with diabetes. By making a donation on my behalf, you will be helping the Association provide community-based education programs, protect the rights of people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure.
No matter how small or large, your generous donation will help us Stop Diabetes.
Did you know that 1 in 3 children in the United States face a future with diabetes?
The Association works everyday to change the frightening future that diabetes has in store, but we need your help. Please make a donation to my fundraising efforts. Together we can Stop Diabetes.
Why Help Me Stop Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors appear to play roles. There are 23.6 million Americans living with diabetes, a disease that is outpacing heart disease, cancer and AIDS. Diabetes is a disease that has deadly serious consequences, and there is no cure.
On June 5, 2010, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. It's become a 'normal' part of my life because it's a 24/7/365 thing! There's nothing I can't do with T1D, except produce insulin, and that's not a big deal because my OmniPod insulin pump takes care of that!! I'm your typical 10 year old who loves to hang out with friends and do fun things like archery. It just takes a little extra preparation and planning because of T1D.
I test my blood sugar an average of 10 times a day (OK, well, my mom tests a couple of those times because I'm sleeping!). I dose insulin an average of 5 times a day (yep, sometimes my mom does that, too, because I'm sleeping!) All of my food has to be portioned out and carb counted. Sometimes I have to stop what I'm doing...school work, playing, or whatever...to test my blood sugar because I feel that my blood sugar is low or high. I have to either eat a snack to bring up my blood sugar or dose insulin to bring it down.
I would love to not have to test my blood sugar and take insulin every time I eat, but until a cure is found, I have to do it to stay alive. My family and I are walking to help raise money to fund the research to find a cure. It would be amazing to be told one day that I don't have to worry about my diabetes anymore.
Can you help me help them find a cure? Please.
This year, we are setting The Bean Team's goal at $3000. Yes, it's a big goal, but it's nothing in comparison to how BIG it would be for there to be a cure in Bean's lifetime!
Your generosity will not only help the American Diabetes Association, but it will also earn Bean a trip to Diabetes Camp next summer. She was able to attend the past three summers because of your generosity in years past and had an amazing time being around over 50 other kids with diabetes. It's a place where she "doesn't feel alone because of diabetes" and that's priceless!
Every donation helps; no matter the size!
Thank you for supporting a cause that is very close to our hearts!!
