Hawaii's very own - Devin and his story...

Aloha! My name is Devin Rettke from Honolulu, Hawaii and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 9.

Since the 3rd grade, I had to deal with the everyday challenges of trying to regulate my insulin while attending school and participating in sport activities.

Unlike most of you, I do not have the pleasure of eating whatever I want or training as much as I would like to...  I just want to sit down and have a normal meal without having to count the carbs, fats, fiber, and protein so I can try to figure out what will it do to my blood sugar in a few hours. In order to train, I must remain hooked up to wires and constantly interpreting numbers; not my heart rate, cadence, or speed – but my insulin levels.

I know what 24/7 means.  You see, diabetes never goes away - but I am determined to never let it stop me...

I posed a challenge to myself years ago, to be the youngest type 1 diabetic to complete an IronMan. Guess what? I did it!

So today I challenge you... I challenge you, your company, team and friends, to take part in the Tour de Cure Hawaii event. Your support will help Hawaii programs and mission services and provide much needed funding for diabetes research so that one day I and the millions of others who have diabetes will live a life free of diabetes and all its burdens.

Ride for me and the 26 million people in the United States who have diabetes.

Ride for your mom, dad, brother, sister, grandmother, grandfather, child… Ride for Hawaii!

There is no other disease that touches us more than diabetes - with your kokua, we will Stop Diabetes.

Champions To Stop Diabetes

When you ride in Tour de Cure, you take part in something unique. You join the ranks of some of the most passionate people in the country people who care about cycling, health and, above all, finding a cure for diabetes.

If you raise $1,000 or more for a local Tour de Cure you will automatically become a Champion to Stop Diabetes and will receive special recognition on the weekend of the event, along with special perks all year long!

If you raise $2,600, in honor of the 26 million Americans living with diabetes, you will become a Champion on a Mission and will receive the coveted gold Champions jersey.

Do you or someone you know have diabetes?

Thousands of people with diabetes participate in Tour as "Red Riders". Red Riders are the reason we ride—they are given a jersey to proudly wear on the day of the event. Beyond the recognition, Red Riders are part of a community that inspires us to ride and raise money to Stop Diabetes. Be sure to choose "Red Rider" when you register!

Team Red

Team Red is for Red Riders (participants with type 1 or type 2 diabetes), their family, friends and anyone else who is looking to join with millions of others who want to Stop Diabetes! Any rider who isn't already on another team can join Team Red.

Being on Team Red means that you will instantly be a part of a community made up of people from all different areas and walks of life. Team Red is a great way to connect with other families supporting a Red Rider and other families that are honoring a loved one with diabetes.

If I don't have diabetes, can I join Team Red?
YES! You can join Team Red, which is made up of Red Riders AND those who support Red Riders. This is a team for anyone who doesn't already have a team.

This year Andrea Huston, a member of the ADA Hawaii Advocacy Committee, is Team Captain for Team Red! Join her ride to Stop Diabetes here in Hawaii!
