Team Tosh

We ride because we are proud to do our part to Stop Diabetes. We decided to team up to change the future and make a positive impact in the lives of those who are affected by diabetes. We are committed to ride and raise money in this inspirational event not because 26 million people in the United States have diabetes, but because we personally know some of them, and want to do something about it.

About Team Tosh!

June 2, 2007    Team Tosh was formed as a Family Team for the Jersey Shore Tour de Cure.  Captain Michael attempted to recruit a number of Lockheed Martin riders from work to no avail, but was able to bring along Grandpa Joe for the ride setting out from the Brookdale Community College in Lincroft.  This early season ride provided very well shaded roads along mostly deserted suburbia, and was both Mike's and Joe's first experience with organized charity cycling events.  This day we decided we would continue doing this for quite some time.  There were less than 100 riders total participating in this event, and everyone appeared to have a good time.

June 21, 2008    In 2008, Team Tosh grew exponentially, from two in the initial year to the largest crowd of 10 riders.  The team was joined by Grammom Carla, as well as family friends Craig & Joan Glick who have their own tie to T1D.  Work friends Bob, Pawel, and Cliff rode the longer, 62 mile route.  Work friend Steiner and his wife, Kristen Steiner joined everone else on the 35 mile route.  This year was the first year that the Jersey Shore ride hit the boardwalk and shore towns, which on a summer day can mean some crazy traffic.   The ride kicked off from the Brielle Middle School.  The cycling crowd as a whole also grew a bit as the ride gained notoriety.  But everyone survived and everyone had a good time, and in the end we raised a bit of money for the ADA!

May 30, 2009    In 2009, sister Kristen joined the Team Tosh family, as did a few friends as well.  Coworker Friends Bob T, Pawel S, and Cliff H made a showing for the 62 mile option, while Captain Mike, Grandpa Joe, and Kris braved the 35 mile ride up the boardwalk and out through the wilderness of Montgomery County.  2009 was the first year for the Red Rider program, which Captain Mike eagerly participated in.  The 35 mile ride repeated the 2008 route.

June 19, 2010    Uncle John decided to roll out of bed to join Team Tosh for our final Jersey Shore TdC, as this ride is right in his own backyard.  Not sure why he never joined us before, but hey, we were happy to have him.  Also, Grammom Carla returned for another adventure.  We split into two groups, Captain Mike, sister Kris, and Uncle John were in the "fast" group, and Grammom Carla and Grandpa Joe were part of the "appreciating the sights" group, but somehow we all ended up getting back around the same time.  Also this year, the ride turned south down 35 instead of north along the boardwalk which provided some new scenery.  We discovered this the hard way after missing the official start.  We headed out the previous direction to find ourselves out on the road alone.  Whoops!  A quick U Turn got us back on track and caught up with the back of the larger group.

May 14, 2011    A new location, and only three riders.  With the Jersey Shore ride moving back into September, and a new Delaware based ride opening up, Team Tosh took to new territory to trounce the tumefied terrain of the greater Elkton area.  Captain Mike, sister Kris, and local Delaware Hipster Gordon Roth joined forces in the inaugural Newark DE ride, a very small ride in comparison to the previous year's Jersey Shore ride, to continue the Team Tosh Tradition.

May 12, 2012    As the Newark ride grows, so does Team Tosh. For 2012, we were joined by newcomers Vicky, Kelly, Amber, Lily, Julia, and Joey.  With such a large showing and so much fun to be had, we split into 3 groups.  The sprinters, Kelly, Vicky, Lily, and Julia, rested up in the cool of the A/C at home to prepare for a strong finish as our official Cheerleading squad.  The publicity caravan, Carla, Kris, Amber, and Joey, took to the streets in search of any and all playgrounds on, near, or not-so-near the 10 mile route to show people how much fun cycling for charity can be.  Finally, the Kings of the Mountain riders, Joe and Mike, struggled in the blistering heat while climbing the Col de Fair Hill, the Great Elkton Passage, and the Col de Iron Hill.  We even survived the super fast descent into downtown Elkton without a scratch.  In the end, we enjoyed a great lunch together and discussed our yearning for the seventh installment of a Team Tosh event at the 2013 Newark TdC.

May 4, 2013    Our expectations for 2013 are high.  Seven is a lucky number, and 7 years of Team Tosh is a great milestone.  We have banded together with Team Thruston to get a uniform jersey that we can all wear year round! For the ride, a Playground Route may be planned, and maybe the kids will even get to ride their own bikes without training wheels!  What about you?  Are you going to join us this year?  Are you going to take the step and commit to a fun time?  Maybe the Lighthouse of Turkey Point will light your fire for a metric century, 100km?  Or 35 miles of rolling hillsaround Elkton is more your style?  Or the flat 10 mile Newark adventure? Or for the kid at heart, go for the 5 mile playground tour! (BYO-Juice/PB&J)  Whatever your heart yearns for, do it for you, do it for the fun, do it for the diabetics.

Due to the recent increases in fund raising minimums, this could very well be the final year for Team Tosh.  That means, join us now and have a story to tell for the rest of your life!
