Tour de Cure St. Louis
Washington University Diabetes Center Team
|
We ride because we are proud to do our part to Stop Diabetes. The Washington University Diabetes Center at Barnes Jewish Hospital assists in the care of patients with all forms of diabetes and as such we understand intimately the resources needed to provide this care as well as the burdens that diabetes places on the individual, the family and society. The Diabetes center utilizes all the tools available to alleviate these burdens including technology, counseling, therapeutics and research but despite these tools we are still limited in the number of people with diabetes that we can touch. We decided to team up to change the future and make a positive impact in the lives of those who are affected by diabetes as well as increase the ability of the School of Medicine and the American Diabetes Association to get effective messages out to our community for prevention. We are committed to ride and raise money in this inspirational event not because 26 million people in the United States have diabetes, but because we personally know some of them, and want to do something about it. The Diabetes Center team is looking to recruit patients with diabetes cared for in the center, faculty, family, colleagues and friends to ride in solidarity with the American Diabetes Association. The team goal is to recruit 50 riders this year that will employ goal setting behavior which will lead to improved fitness and health for us as participants and our community. Research has shown that exercise associated with modest weight loss can decrease the risk for the development of diabetes in high risk individuals and to improve the metabolic control in those with the disease. This ride is an excellent opportunity to set a physical fitness as well as a fundraising goal that is outside of your current comfort zone and to set an example for others to follow. Please join me and the rest of the Diabetes center team as we work to find new treatments, approaches and cures for diabetes and its related complications. My wife, Lynn and I are the co captains of this years’ team and will be riding our Tandem for this year’s tour. The Tour de Cure is not a race. It is an opportunity to ride with like minded individuals for a worthy goal and have fun in the process. We are looking forward to meeting and riding with you in the coming months. If you can't join us, support us! By making a donation or joining our team, you will be helping the Association provide community-based education programs, protect the rights of people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure. As a team, united in our desire to Stop Diabetes, we are asking for your support. Please make a donation to one of our team members or become one of us by joining our team. When we bring together dedicated team members and kind donors, the power we have as a group far outweighs what any of us could do alone. We are determined to reach our team goal, one rider at a time. So let's get in gear and ride to Stop Diabetes!
