I ride because diabetes is very personal to me; I have Type 2. But it is more personal than that - my son Greg has Type 1 diabetes. I want to help prevent and find a cure for diabetes for all kids battling it. Diabetes was a factor in the death of my mother who had Type 2. I saw the devastating effects that this disease had on both my grandmothers, one of whom had Type 1 and the other Type 2.

Diabetes became even more personal to our family on Aug 2, 2011 when my wife's cousin, Scott Dean, passed away from complications of Type 1. He fought hard for so long, enduring amputation, vision loss & dialysis.

I am dedicating this years ride to the memory of my wife Tracy. She spent many sleepless nights staying up to check our son's blood sugars in the early hours of the morning.  She kept on him and I to make sure we did the things we needed to to care for our diabetes.
