Diabetes is tough...I am tougher!!
The Tour de Cure is the event that I look forward to each and every year. For many reasons...
The first year that I participated in Tour de Cure was 2014. I was overwhelmed with the support and encouragement that I received from people I did not know. Being a Red Rider, an inidividual who rides with diabetes, I was easily recognized along the route. As I was cycling along, I heard those around me chant "Go Red Rider Go!". When stopping at the rest stops, the volunteers, seeing my Red Rider cycling jersey and checking my blood sugar, would ask if I needed anything. And then there is the finish line! The finish line is a once in a lifetime experience! As I was approaching, I could hear the crowds cheering on the riders as they came across. I was so overcome with emotion when I crossed the finish line. To see so many people cheer me on, to hear te encouragement and the high fives, I was crying tears of joy and apprecaition.
As I am embarking on Tour #7, I still remember how I felt the first time. I proudly wear my Red Rider jersey and encourage others to do so as well. Tour de Cure is a celebration. A celebration of those thriving with diabetes and for a cure! Tour gives me the opportunity to be with others who are living with diabetes and understand the daily struggles. We come together, hold each other up, and celebrate each other and the milestones that we have laid. Crossing the finish line each year means that I am closer to the cure for diabetes. That I am one year, one day, and one moment closer to saying, "I HAD diabetes!!".
