Your Change Can Make a Change!
Every face has a story...this is mine:
When I was eleven years old, my life changed completely. After months of unexplained illness, intense lethargy, and extreme weight loss, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
Since then, I have been required to test my blood sugar as many as a dozen times daily, and inject insulin for almost everything that I eat. It is now a distant memory of what it was like to wake up in the morning, enjoy a meal, or exercise without thoughts of the repurcussions these simple actions will have on my blood sugar and resultant stamina.
It has become my mission to engage in an active lifestyle, not in spite of, but because of Type 1 diabetes. That is why I am so excited to be a participant in the 29th annual American Diabetes Association's Capital Region Tour De Cure, the second largest tour in the country! This year is especially meaningful to me, as I am now in my 11th year since diagnosis, marking exactly half of my life living with this chronic disease. It is a bittersweet milestone, marking more than a decade of surviving and thriving through the highs and lows, all while growing and evolving as both a person, and an athlete, and I can only hope that a cure will be written in this next chapter of my life. That is why I need your support.
The prospect of crossing the finish line dually represents a tangible victory and an equally significant, metaphorical accomplishment: That impactful life goals can be accomplished through perserverance and vigilance, the same qualities that I draw upon in coping with Type 1 day-to-day.
Shortly after my diagnosis, I voluntarily participated in an experimental drug trial, hopeful that it might hold promise for myself and the millions of others suffering from this incurable disease. Although it ultimately proved unsuccessful, I remain committed to championing the need for more in-depth education, development, and research for diabetes. Though I am grateful that treament options exist for diabetes, there is truly no substitute for a cure. Please join me and the American Diabetes Association in continuing the advancement of scientific research and advocacy for the diabetic community. Your financial contributions today will impact the lives of current diabetics, as well as countless others not yet diagnosed. Every dollar makes a difference. For each stride we take, we log a new mile in our race to find a cure.
