Welcome to my Personal Page
Welcome to my fundraising page.
An open letter to Diabetes.
I never really thought much about you. Oh sure, I heard the particularly Pittsburgh comments about you…he or she’s got “the sugar”. It sounded so innocuous. No big deal. The “sugar”.
Until you got my brother. Type 2. Then I saw what a big bad deal you really are. Insidious, invasive, progressive. I learned that you specialize in subtraction, piece by piece taking away wholeness. You affected my brother’s vision, his kidneys, his vascular system. You took first a toe, then a foot then his left leg. You contributed to six strokes and countless rehabs and nursing home and hospitals stays. What you didn’t take through all of that, amazingly, was Greg’s smile or his will to fight.
You shut down arteries faster than surgeons could open them, destroying tissue and finally coloring my brother’s foot black with gangrene and necrotic tissue. There were no more options. You took his remaining leg in 2017. Still, Greg continued to fight you- his motto was WHATEVER IT TAKES. He contined to be positive and smiling -learning to walk on two prosthetc legs. But you had done your damage, Diabetes, Greg continued to weaken and lost his battle September 30, 2019. You took my brother. You broke my heart.
I didn't think I could do it- I didn't think I could continue his fight. But I know he would want me to.
I know that he will be with us in spirit this year. Team Kegley’s Heroes (Gregs nickname) is coming together to fight this insidious disease. Joining the team will give us the ability to focus and fight you Diabetes in a loud and finite way.
I'll encourage and cheer our team (Ok – really bug them) to make calls and fundraise and don’t take no for an answer.
Show Greg’s picture, tell his story and make it personal.
I know people will respond and give- they realize how devastating you are Diabetes and how many people they know are affected.
Family and friends will join together on Event Day to walk, run or ride. The fighting spirit of the event day will be bittersweet for me--knowing that we are doing whatever it takes...but too late for my brother.
Seeing the numbers that come together to fight you Diabetes, you must know you are on the losing team. We are stronger, more committed and more determined than ever to eradicate you.
Please, help me honor my brothers spirit by joining his team, Kegleys Heroes and make a difference in finding a cure.
Won't you join me? Walk. Run. Or ride. Participate virtually. Donate. Your involvement will make a difference.
With heartfelt appreciation,
