2017 - Spin, spin, sugar
Type 1 Hype Rides Again for Diabetes!
Since being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2005, I have witnessed a lot of scientific advancements in the world of diabetes. Our understanding of this crazy disease increases every year, and more effective and convenient ways to treat it are constantly being developed. I have personally benefitted from technological advances, having gone from using old-school needles and insulin vials, to insulin pens with tiny needle tips, to the tubeless insulin pump I use now. The latest upgrade for me was switching to a Dexcom continuous glucose monitoring system in January. Being able to see the moment to moment changes in my blood sugar has made a huge difference in my ability to keep my sugars in range. Even though I have gotten better at dealing with the day-to-day demands of my diabetes, I have also witnessed friends and family endure new diagnoses and suffer long-term complications of uncontrolled diabetes. With each new diagnosis, I am reminded that there is a lot of work left to be done to combat diabetes.
That’s why I ride in the annual American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure bike ride. It’s my chance to raise awareness about a disease that affects, either directly or indirectly, almost everyone I know. This year the ride will be on July 23, 2017. Please consider making a donation to support me and my amazing team, Type 1 Hype, in this year’s ride. As we did last year, Bob and I are planning to match every dollar our team raises between now and July 23. If you want to ride with us, please join our team. It is a great ride for a great cause.
