Welcome to my Personal Page
I have had Type 1 (Insulin Dependent) Diabetes for 47 years. As a child, it started with 1 injection a day, then as a teenager, 2 shots a day, then as an adult, 5 injections a day. In the 1990's, a 10 year study concluded that tight control of the disease by balancing nutrition, exercise and insulin dosages had measurable benefits to health and longevity. New insulins that closely resembled human insulin were introduced and insulin pumps, instead of injections became the norm. Now we are at the brink of complete artificial intelligence system where a closed loop computer controlled dosage and blood glucose sensing will revolutionize the "control" aspect of this disease. We are awaiting FDA approval of this system, which will minimize complications from the disease and associated health care costs.
As an example of the health care costs of a Type 1 diabetic -- my blood glucose sensing device ($12k), plus test strips ($2k), plus insulin ($9k), plus insulin pump ($20k) costs my insurance $43,000 per year. And that does not include the complications and resulting health care costs of this disease (One example : Eye surgeries $150k).
Something needs to change. It started with just one decision and one intention.
I decided to make a difference in my life and the lives of others. I registered to participate in the Tour de Cure and I am now raising money to prevent diabetes, to fight the consequences and to improve the lives of all of those affected. I want to find a cure.
