Support Me in Tour de Cure!
On June 1, 2019 I'll be riding with my dad in this year's American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure fund-raising event. If you want to ride with us, sign up on Team Shapiro! It is a fun day, not a race, can ride any distance as little as 6 miles or even do a walk by the scenic falls instead. There is music, lunch, and supportive people.
My mom has Type 1 diabetes, and she's the reason why I ride every year. The cause of Type 1 diabetes is unknown, but the result of it is a defective pancreas that is unable to secrete insulin. This causes the body to be unable to regulate blood sugar levels, thus disturbing homeostasis, and, if not treated, can result in death. This will be my 12th year riding for this cause that is so dear to me. As I have the past few years, I'll be riding 30 miles this year! My dad has ridden all the distances from 6 miles (with me on my first bike) to 100 miles in the rain since 2002. Together we have raised over $40,000 for diabetes research and advocacy. As with many drugs there has been a huge price hike in Insulin recently and many diabetics cannot afford this lifesaving medicine.
With your help, we can raise money to research and find a cure for Type 1. Any donation helps! If you would like to support me by donating all you have to do is select the "Donate to Me" link. No matter how small or large, your generous gift will help improve the lives of more than 23 million Americans who suffer from diabetes in the hope that future generations can live in a world without this disease. Together, we can all make a difference!
if you do not want to donate online you can mail us a check (made out to American Diabetes Association, ADA) at:
