Welcome to My Tour de Cure Web Page!
I will be cycling 62 miles in the American Diabetes Association's Northwest Arkansas Tour de Cure fundraising event. I will be riding as a Red Rider (riders with diabetes). This will be my 53rd Tour de Cure to participate in and my 41st since being diagnosed with diabetes.
My father passed away in 2007 from complications of diabetes and at that point, my life changed forever. I had to get more involved. I experienced firsthand the tragedy of diabetes.
In July 2008, shortly after riding 165 miles in the Jacksonville TdC, I was diagnosed with diabetes. I weighed 220 lbs in February 2008 but started losing weight for unknown reasons. I was down to 165 lbs when I was diagnosed and eventually reached 145 lbs. Underweight for my height and age.
Since then, I have maintained 160-170 lbs and am on a high protein/low carb diet. I lift weights 5 mornings a week, run 30-40 miles a week, and ride 150-250 miles a week.
I am fortunate that to this point, I can manage my diabetes with diet and exercise BUT...it is very difficult and many cannot do this.
I encourage those with diabetes to exercise and eat according to a strict diet.
