Ride to Cure Diabetes
This Saturday I will rIde my bicycle in the American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure. This is the 11th year that Norfolk Southern has had a team and I'm proud to say that I have ridden on each ride. This year I am riding 65 miles in this one day event. If I am successful in completing this goal, this year will make more 885 miles that I have ridden in support of my friends with diabetes but more importantly each of those miles has been to raise money to put an end to this disease.
I want to take a minute of your time and share a very personal story. When I began riding in the Tour de Cure my life had been touched by a young woman who cared for my daughter, Kim. This young woman had diabetes and inspired me to help her and the many like her in the small way that I could. On the morning of the ride two years ago, as I readied myself for the ride, I received word that this young woman had lost her life to diabetes. This woman was a mom, grandmother, teacher, caregiver and a friend. The face of diabetes.
Every year when I start training for this ride, I meet someone new who suffers from diabetes. There are over 26 million Americans living with diabetes. If current trends continue, one out of three children will face a future with diabetes. This is a startling statistic and your donation will help to change this.
By making a donation to support us, you will be helping the American Diabetes Association change the future of diabetes by providing community-based education programs, protect the rights of people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure.
I know my participation in this year's Tour de Cure can and will make a difference. Please help by supporting my ride with a donation. Any amount, large or small will make a difference!
Many thanks for your support.
