Welcome to My Tour de Cure Web Page!
Hi everyone! Thanks for checking out my Tour de Cure website. As you may or may not know, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in October of 2007. Diabetes runs in my family, my brother is on an insulin pump to regulate his blood sugar, and my mother takes several pills each day. In addition, she has had her eyes operated on for diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that (if untreated) can cause blindness.
Six years ago, I made the decision to try to take my life back into my own hands by controlling my blood sugar through diet and exercise and I bought a bike. At that point, I weighed 380lbs and was taking 1500mg of glucophage a day. In the ensuing year I lost over 60 lbs and was able to come off of mediaction completely. After that first year, I wasn't as careful as I should be, and I was see-sawing back in the wrong direction... I used last years tour as motivation to get back on track, and I'm moving in the right direction! I recently hit a milestone of my lowest weight since high school. Through diet and excercie I've eliminated all prescription drugs from care plan. It occurred to me this summer on a very long hot ride, when asking myself, 'Why do I do this?'...
I literally ride to stop Diabetes!
By getting on my bike as often as possible, and doing everything I can to eat sensibly and make good decisions, I am stopping diabetes in my life... for now. Unfortunately, Diabetes is a progressive disease, and will be an issue for me for the rest of my life. Until we find a cure, Diabetes will always be a concern, not just for me, but for my family... and 1 in 3 of all Americans.
As Diabetes runs in my family, I have another reason to ride. My daughter is my world, and I love her more than anything; it scares me that based on my family history it is very likely that she will at some point develop diabetes. Karen and I do our best to teach her healthy habbits, but there is only one way to garuntee that this disease will not affect her. We NEED to find a cure!
You can help too by joining me for the ride on Team Red or donating to the American Diabetes Association (securely over the internet by clicking the "Donate to Me" button on this page). No matter how small or large, your generous gift will help improve the lives of nearly 24 million Americans who suffer from diabetes, in the hope that future generations can live in a world without this disease. Together, we can all make a difference!
Thank you for making a generous contribution to this cause that is so important to my family!
