Welcome to my Tour de Cure page!
Tom and I are once again raising money for diabetes research and treatment through the Tour de Cure bike ride in Rhode Island being held on October 3.
It seems that every time I mention that Tom is a diabetic, the person I am talking to says something like "So am I" or "my dad is one, too" or "I have an aunt who's diabetic" or a similar statement. It seems everyone knows at least one diabetic. It's an epidemic.
As of 2019, an estimated 463 million people had diabetes worldwide (8.8% of the adult population). Rates are similar in women and men. Trends suggest that rates will continue to rise. Diabetes at least doubles a person's risk of early death. In 2019, diabetes resulted in approximately 4.2 million deaths. It is the 7th leading cause of death both globally and in the US. The global economic cost of diabetes related health expenditure in 2017 was estimated at US$727 billion. In the United States, diabetes cost nearly US$327 billion in 2017.
Again, from Wikipedia: "...the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) that 1 in 3 Americans born after 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetie."
1 in 3. Think about that for a minute. 1 in 3.
We need to stop this disease and soon. Every dollar you donate will help us do that. Please give generously.
