Welcome to Ruby's Riders
Thanks for coming to my page and learning about the Tour de Cure! My real name is Julianna but everyone calls me Ruby- it's a long story you will have to ask my Grandmother about.
I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on my 5th birthday. I am now almost 14 years old and have been living with this disease for over half of my life and will continue to live with it for the rest of my life. Most of you who know me have seen my daily struggles with blood sugar highs and lows, worries about how many carbs are in that piece of pizza and that piece of cake, did I bring enough sugar in case I go low during my soccer game, did I text my mom before I go to sleep at the sleepover party. I am very lucky that I have friends and family who take great care to make sure all of these things don't play a major role in my life and I still get to have sleepovers, eat pizza and play soccer.
The other people who have played a major role in my adjustment to diabetes are the ADA! From the very beginning they offered support, information on new technologies, camp opportunities and even advice on how to handle diabetes in school. One of my first babysitters after my diagnosis worked at the ADA - they wanted to help my parents out because it is a bit difficult finding a babysitter who wants to give a 5 year old insulin shots after dinner! They asked me to be in a commercial, be a youth ambassador, and I hope to become a role model for other kids suffering with this disease. This is our way of giving back to the many people who have helped us along the way and its fun too- I love to ride my bike!
My goal is to reach "Champion" Status which means you have to raise $1,000.00 or more. It's super exciting when you reach this staus, not only knowing that I have raised alot of money to help find a cure but knowing about all the special treats that I get to enjoy. As a Champion we get special recognition and get to hang out in a cool tent with donuts and a private bathroom.
