After being a Type II Diabetic for roughly 20 years, I had a gastric bypass in April 2013. Within a few weeks I was off my diabetic meds and within a year I had lost 100lbs. A lot of that weight was burned on top of a bike and training for the 100 mile course of the Tour de Cure 2014. However, I'll always be diabetic: I am just managing it by controlling my weight and exercising.
My case is very unique, and I was VERY fortunate to not have any diabetic related complications. I ride to help fund research to find a cure for all diabetics. I ride to support the ADA that in turn supports numerous people with diabetes and their families. Lastly, I ride to keep in shape and make sure I stay healthy.
In 2018, my son and I will be riding the 63 mile route. If you are making a donation, please donate to him, it will make him very happy: http://main.diabetes.org/goto/gabriel2018
