After being a Type II Diabetic for roughly 20 years, I had a gastric bypass in April 2013. Within a few weeks I was off my diabetic meds and within a year I had lost 100lbs. A lot of that weight was burned on top of a bike and training for the 100 mile course of the Tour de Cure 2014. However, I'll always be diabetic: I am just managing it by controlling my weight and exercising.
My case is very unique, and I was VERY fortunate to not have any diabetic related complications. I ride to help fund research to find a cure for all diabetics. I ride to support the ADA that in turn supports numerous people with diabetes and their families. Lastly, I ride to keep in shape and make sure I stay healthy.
This year I was planning on riding the 65 mile route with my son, but Chicago weather hasn't been cooperating with his training, and we feel he wouldn't be ready for it in less than two months. Instead, I will be riding the 100 mile while he runs the 5K with his mom.
