Trying to Keep Up the Pace!
Well, here I am again preparing for my SEVENTH year riding in the SC Tour de Cure! Every year has been fun, well organized, and meaningful in terms of raising funds for a great cause. Although I've seen changes to the event during the years, this year will be by far the biggest change! With COVID-19 still active, the ride has been made "virtual".
Once again, I'll be riding as a member of Team The Young and the Restofus! As you might expect, I'm "therestofus", and the young will be my grandson, Davis Hagstette (12). This will be Davis's fifth ride with me! I'm planning the virtual ride for Davis and me to take place at North Myrtle Beach. Davis and his mom and dad will join my wife Janet and me for the weekend, and we'll figure a good route and some fun activities for the rest of the weekend.
Of course, there are more reasons to ride in the S.C. TdC than simply enjoying a nice day with my grandson. Cycling is such a fun activity! It's not only a healthy thing to do, but it provides a social aspect that's not attainable in many other sports. I get to know and interact with such a broad spectrum of fellow cyclers...all coming together because of their belief in a common cause. Getting to know these folks is great, and it certainly beats the interaction on social media!
Finally, riding the S.C. TdC is a fun and easy way to raise badly needed funds to support a great cause. Through the generosity of many friends, I am able to raise a significant amount of money to go towards research and treatment for diabetes. Diabetes is much too common. Every one of us knows someone who suffers from it, and we are all familiar with the life-changing impact it has on our family and friends. Through the many Tour de Cure rides that take place across the country, many thousands of dollars are raised to combat the disease. Even without the bonding and fitness benefits for me, the possibility of helping to eradicate diabetes is reason enough to make this ride.
Whether the ride is actual or virtual, it still provides an opportunity to have fun and to do good. Once again, I'm asking for your help. As you consider all the places you can put your money to good use, I hope you will consider donating to this worthy cause. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your consideration and help. Every single dollar counts, so please ... be as generous as you can.
Thanks so much!
Doug Marks, Team Captain of "The Young and the Restofus"!
