2017 Greater Maryland Tour de Cure

Ruby's Riders

 Friends and Family,

We are so excited to be riding again this year. For the past two years Ruby biked the 10 mile course with her mom and her Dad takes on the 60 mile ride as he has done for the last 6 years. This year Ruby and Mom will riding the 22 mile course.  Our team has grown over the years and we appreciate all the friends and family who take part in this event.

As many of you know Julianna (or Ruby as we call her) was diagnosed at just 5 years old with Type 1 diabetes. That was 6 years ago and even though she is a multi-sport, honor role, super musical, awesome big sister at 12 years old it continues to be a daily struggle. As her mom it is heartbreaking every time she gets poked and prodded during her site changes and blood sugar checks. Heartbreak turns to fear when her blood sugar drops in the night and I have trouble waking her to drink juice. Fear turns to anger when her blood sugar spikes and we can't figure out why. These emotions are real and sometimes they happen all in the same day! This disease is relentless, exhausting and has you question all that is good. And then you see my Ruby- and realize she is the good. She is stoic during times of pain, is fearless in the dark and always calm during the roughest of days. This disease will not take her smile, will not slow her down and it will not dash her hope.

That is why I ride!
