Washington University Diabetes Center
Diabetes is on the rise. This heartless disease is attacking even more Americans of all ages, leading to a life of burdens and a long list of devastating and potentially deadly complications including heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, and amputation. Health care costs are also skyrocketing, straining our society and making it harder for people living with diabetes to afford the care they need to successfully manage their disease.
• Growing Epidemic: One in 11 Americans is living with diabetes today – that’s roughly 30 million people. If current trends continue, one in three American adults will have diabetes by 2050.
• Deadly Disease: Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S., killing more Americans each year than HIV and breast cancer, combined.
• Costly Crisis: $1 out of every $5 health care dollars is spent caring for people living with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association estimates that the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes in the United States is $322 billion.
Our team is supporting the American Diabetes Association because we want to make a difference. We want to lead. We want to inspire. We want to empower. We want a cure!
We are teaming up now to change the future and make a positive impact in the lives of those who are affected by diabetes. We are committed to participate together and raise money through this inspirational event not just because over 30 million people in the United States have diabetes, but because so many of us personally know some of them, and want to do something about it.
This year, you can run, ride or walk with our team at Tour de Cure! If you can't join our team on June 2, become a virtual rider or support us with a donation!
By making a donation or joining our team, you will be helping the Association provide community-based education programs, protect the rights of people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure.
When we bring together dedicated team members and generous donors, the power we have as a group far outweighs what any of us could do alone.
We are determined to reach our team goal, one person at a time. So let's make a difference together!
