Dr. Fred Brancati was the Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins and internationally-known as a diabetes researcher. He dedicated his career to understanding the causes of diabetes, disparities in diabetes and its complications, and interventions to prevent and treat diabetes. He was most grateful to the American Diabetes Association for helping him to get started in the field through a career development award. He was awarded the prestigious Kelly West Award in 2010 for his body of work in diabetes epidemiology. The team name, “Forza Brancati” was chosen by Fred in 2013 as a nod to his Italian heritage (translation: “Brancati Force”). The team is supported by the Brancati Center for the Advancement of Community Care, a center named in Fred’s honor, aiming to improve the health of the community.
Personal Note from Nisa Maruthur (Team Captain): As a primary care doctor and diabetes researcher, I see how hard it is to make the lifestyle changes necessary to prevent or treat diabetes. I see the ADA Tour de Cure as a way to bring together all of the people who have a stake in diabetes – patients, health care providers, researchers, family, and friends.
