Riding on Skittles

My name is Jackson Burke and I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on December 23, 2016, at the age of 12, and my life was changed forever.

Living with Type 1 requires lots of careful planning, math, and constant focus. I never have a day off, let alone an hour or two, and my previous routine life has become much harder. I have to constantly monitor my blood glucose, count the carbs for everything I eat, and administer insulin throughout the day and overnight. If I fail to do a good job managing my diabetes I put my life at risk. I don’t want to continue to suffer with diabetes and neither do millions of Americans – we need a cure!

With the support of my mom and dad, my friends, and my school, St. Johns Prep, I have been able to return to all of the activities I enjoyed prior to diagnosis, and been able to thrive in them. In addition to my favorite activities like sailing, fencing, kayaking, swimming, scuba diving, and hanging out with my friends I decided to take up road biking so I could participate in the Tour de Cure to contribute in a positive way to finding a cure. In June of 2017 I purchased a brand new road bike by borrowing the money from my parents and mowing neighborhood lawns all summer to pay for it. I started with my first ride of 25 miles, leaving the bike shop in Newburyport and riding home to Beverly with my new bike. I have since completed many rides between 20 and 50 miles, and last year I completed 63 miles in the North Shore Tour de Cure in just over four hours of riding time. These rides are not easy, from an exercise or glucose management perspective. In order to keep my blood glucose at a safe level I am sometimes required to consume sugar, and my go-to sugar for raising my blood glucose has been Skittles.

Welcome to Riding on Skittles, my team for the North Shore Tour de Cure

Please consider joining my team, as a rider, runner, or walker. Last year my team of 7 riders raised $5,793. This year I want to be sure to beat this goal and I would love to have more people join the team to run, walk, or ride.

Please Help Me Reach My Goal!

When you donate:

• You spread awareness of the devastating effects of diabetes
• You advocate for a child discriminated against in school because of diabetes
• You fund life-saving research
• You provide access to community programs and free resources that help those living with diabetes

By participating in the Tour de Cure, I hope to inspire others to join me and raise money to find a cure to diabetes.
Thank you for making a generous donation to this cause that is so important to me and millions of other people.
