...is for Red Riders (participants with type 1 or type 2 diabetes), their family, friends and anyone else who is looking to join with millions of others that want to Stop Diabetes! Any rider who isn't already on another team can join Team Red. And being on Team Red means that you will instantly be a part of a community made up of people from all different areas and walks of life. Team Red is a great way to connect with other families supporting a Red Rider and other families that are honoring a loved one with diabetes.
CAN OTHERS WITHOUT DIABETES JOIN TEAM RED?
YES! You (and those that support you) can join Team Red, which again is made up of Red Riders AND those who support Red Riders. This is a team for anyone who doesn't already have a team.
CAN WALKERS AND RUNNERS JOIN TEAM RED?
YES! If you have family members or friends who are not cyclists and want to participate by walking or running instead of riding, they can still register as a member of Team Red!
HOW DID TEAM RED GET STARTED?
Team Red got its start in 2007 when Mari Ruddy started the Red Rider program and quickly discovered the need for a team for everyone supporting their Red Riders and for folks new to Tour de Cure who were looking for a team. From those humble beginnings in 2007, Team Red has now expanded across the country to all Tour de Cure events.
Team Red – Garden State began in 2011, formed by current Co-Captain of Team Red, Michael Klein. Michael's daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2008 at the age of 9. He began riding in the Princeton Tour de Cure that year and rode as an individual rider until 2011 when the ADA asked him to form a local Team Red and he gladly accepted. Since that time, Team Red - Garden State has consistently been the top Friends & Family team, and has raised over $260,000 since its inception!
Russell Wood is a new Co-Captain to Team Red - Garden State. Russell was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in July of 2018. Signing up for Garden State Tour de Cure 2019 provided him with a concrete fitness goal and the drive to keep his nutrition and physical health in gear. Tour was the the most challenging athletic event he had ever participated in to that point. Tour helped him fall in love with cycling and it led him to the advocacy supported by the American Diabetes Association.
Are you a Red Rider? Do you have a family member or friend with diabetes? Do you just want to do your part to help in the fight to find a cure for diabetes? Then YOU are a candidate to join Team Red!
