Houston Sweetheart Program

American Diabetes Association Sweethearts are all young women from Houston area high schools, who are invited by the ADA to help in the fight against diabetes. Sweethearts gain valuable experience in fundraising, volunteerism, event planning and team work. The ADA Sweetheart Program begins in September and concludes in May. During this time, each Sweetheart will:

  • Participate in leadership, team-building and social activities representing the ADA
  • Complete a minimum of 15 hours of service for the ADA and related events
  • Raise a minimum of $2,000 to support the ADA
  • Be presented at the 2012 Wine & Roses Wine Auction and Gala, having completed her service hours and achieved $2,000 goal

Leadership. ADA Sweethearts participate in leadership programs, develop team-building skills and enjoy social activities including a Father/Daughter Event, Mother/Daughter Luncheon and the Sweetheart presentation during the Gala in May.

Volunteerism. Sweethearts participate by volunteering for ADA programs and events that benefit children and adults with diabetes, such as:

  • Tour de Cure - September 22, 2012
  • Feria de la Salud - April 2012
  • ADA Wine Auction & Gala - May 4, 2012

Fundraising. Sweethearts work both individually and as a team to raise money to support ADA's mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

All Sweethearts who have successfully completed the program are honored for their service and commitment at ADA's annual Wine & Roses Wine Auction and Gala in May. Each girl is presented at this gala event by her father or another family member. She is recognized as a dedicated volunteer and as a young woman of strength and character.
