Do you or someone you know have diabetes?

Thousands of people with diabetes participate in Step Out as "Red Striders". Red Striders are the reason that we walk and enjoy some special perks. Beyond the recognition, Red Striders are part of a community that inspires us to walk and raise money to Stop Diabetes. Be sure to choose "Red Strider" when you register! Learn more.

Register. Fundraise. Stop Diabetes.

We Step Out Because...

You can Step Out and make a difference! Everyone has a very personal reason for participating in Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes. What is yours?

We Step Out to do our part to Stop Diabetes! Participants are changing the future and making a positive impact in the lives of those who are affected by diabetes.

Step Out participants are committed to walk and raise money in this inspirational event not because 26 million people in the United States have diabetes, but because they walk among us in our lives and at the event.

By registering, you will be helping the Association provide community-based education programs, protect the rights of people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure.

Once you register, you'll be giving your very own web page and will have access to lots of tools to help you fundraise your Step Out Center. You'll be able to customize the page with your reason for walking, send emails to ask others to join you or donate, and even download Facebook and smart phone apps. And of course, your ADA staff partner will be here to help all along the way!

Special Thanks to our 2012 Step Out Top Team- Ben's Bunch!

Ben's Team 2012

Ben's Bunch began some nine years ago when I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes.  We began as a small group that first year and have grown to as many as 70 plus walkers all dedicated to the Walk.  This means "there will be a cure for diabetes in my lifetime."  This has been a wonderful team of family and friends who have worked hard each year to raise funds for the Association to carry on the research necessary for a successful conclusion to the goal.  Some years ago at the Step Out Kick-off Luncheon, a wonderful speaker made a never forgotten speech that concluded with the sentence, "Don't be afraid to ask."  My team has adopted that as our theme each year when soliciting contributions.  My one suggestion to all the teams who will be walking at Keeneland on June 1st is to remember that we can make it happen if we remain dedicated to supporting the researchers who will one day find the cure.  Keep in mind, "Don't be afraid to ask!"

Date:                         Saturday, June 1, 2013

Location:                   Keeneland Race Course Barn 2

Walking is one of the easiest, most relaxing forms of exercise for many people, but especially for those living with diabetes. Walking helps control blood glucose levels in people with diabetes and improves overall quality of life. It is also an activity that can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes in people at risk.

 Meet Parker:

Parker

Parker was diagnosed with diabetes right before his 9th birthday in 3rd grade.  Shortly after, he and his family found out about Step Out:  Walk to Stop Diabetes.  Parker, also known as Scoop, and his family decided on the team name “Scoop’s Crew,” and they began building their team. They spread the word through letters and by others sharing Parker’s story.

“We have had a team every year since then.  Every year, I want to raise more money and have more people on my team.  I love gathering my friends and family at that stage after the walk, and taking a picture.  I have an overwhelming amount of support with all of those people behind me.”  As one of the 2013 American Diabetes Association Youth Ambassadors, Parker plans on “building the best Scoop’s Crew yet.”

Please join Parker by registering for Step Out:  Walk to Stop Diabetes, recruiting your family, friends and co-workers and coming out to Keeneland on Saturday, June 1st!
