Local FAQ

How long is the walk?
The walk course can vary by location but most walk events offer routes that are family friendly. 

Is there a registration fee?
No, there is no registration fee to participate in the Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes.

Is there a fundraising minimum?
There is no minimum to participate, though we encourage all participants to fundraise. In order to receive an event t-shirt you will have to reach a required fundraising amount. Your local staff will give you more details about the event t-shirt.

Where can I mail cash/check donations?
You can mail any offline donation to our local office at any time.  Please include a note with the name of the walker who should be credited with the donation so we can process it correctly.

How do I get matching gifts from my employer?
Matching gifts can help double and sometimes triple your contribution. Please check with your employer to find out if matching gifts are available or visit our matching gifts search page.

Who do I make checks out to?
Please make checks payable to the American Diabetes Association. Donors can give online by credit card through your personal page or team page.

Can I turn in donations the day of the event?
Absolutely! Just come to the registration/check-in tent upon arrival. To minimize delays we suggest counting all money and placing it in the participant collection envelope, if you do not have a collection envelope we would be happy to mail you one or you can pick one up on the day of the event.

Can I walk and volunteer?
Yes, you can absolutely help volunteer and participate as a walker. Visit our Volunteer Page for more information or contact your local staff for more information.

How many people form a team?

Typically a team has five or more individuals. There is no limit as to how large a team can be. If you have a large team, you can assign someone to help you manage it as a co-team captain. Contact Your Pittsburgh Step Out Team at PittsburghStepOut@diabetes.org or 412-824-1181 ext. 4520 to learn more.

Should everyone walking register?
Yes, everyone participating in Step Out Walk should register and fill out a waiver form. Children must register as well.

What if it rains?
We walk rain or shine! Please bring the appropriate gear. In the event of extreme weather (lightening, tornado, etc.) we will make a formal announcement by email, phone, on Facebook and on our website as to any changes in the event.

Are dogs allowed at the walk?
Dogs are allowed in certain locations. Please check with your local event staff.

Can I bring a stroller?
Yes! This is a family-friendly event and children of all ages are welcome.

What is a Red Strider?
If you are living with type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes, then you can be a Red Strider. You will be treated as a VIP of the Step Out Walk and will have the opportunity to meet others who are also living with diabetes. Make sure to select the "Red Strider" option when you register to receive special recognition and rewards.

What is a Champion?
When you raise $1,000 individually you become a Champion to Stop Diabetes. You will receive special recognition at the walk. Learn more Be a Champion

It's easy!

  • Click on the "Register" button located within the top of this page,
  • Find the Step Out you’d like to participate in locally, and
  • At the beginning of registering choose the VIRTUAL WALKER registration option.

Create a Team

You can create a team either through the "Register" button above where you'll first find the nearby event or by visiting the list of events associated with national company below.

Do not forget to associate your newly created team with this company.

 

Credit Card Verification Code

The Verification Code is imprinted on credit cards to help merchants verify transactions when the actual card is not present, such as Internet purchases or donations. The merchant uses this number as part of the authorization process with the card issuer.

The verification code for Visa, Master Card, and Discover is a 3-digit number printed on the back of your card. It appears after the account number or last 4-digits of your account number, in the signature panel.
